Creating a Giant Laser Cut, Engraved & Watercolor Wood Map

Creating a Giant Laser Cut, Engraved & Watercolor Wood Map

Crafting a giant wood map is an ambitious yet rewarding project that combines artistry, woodworking, and technology. In this blog, we will explore the detailed steps taken to create a stunning 4' x 3' map of Fall River, showcasing local businesses and landmarks. This project not only highlights the beauty of the area but also serves as a unique piece of art for the community.

About the Project

The journey began when Viva Fall River reached out with an exciting proposal: to design and create a large map that would represent the local area and its businesses. The goal was to craft a visually engaging piece that would not only serve as a decorative item but also as a functional map for visitors and locals alike. The final product would feature a combination of laser-cut wood and watercolor elements, creating a beautiful contrast that captures the essence of Fall River.

Laserificating the Water Features

The first step in the project involved laser cutting the design out of birch plywood. This process was crucial for creating the water features depicted on the map. The design was based on an actual map of Fall River, with exaggerated streets and water features to enhance visual interest. Using a Glowforge laser cutter, the team meticulously cut out the water features, which would later be painted to add depth and color.

Laserificating the Map

After completing the water features, the focus shifted to the main map itself. The land portion was crafted from walnut wood, measuring 20 inches by 4 feet. The laser cutting process required precision, as the map needed to be cut in two pieces due to the limitations of the Glowforge's size. Each piece underwent a careful cutting process, ensuring that the details were preserved and that the final product would fit together seamlessly.

Painting the Water

Once the cutting was complete, it was time to add color to the water features. The team used watercolor paints to achieve a vibrant look that would contrast beautifully with the wood tones of the map. Multiple layers of paint were applied, allowing the colors to seep into the wood for a more natural appearance. This step required patience and attention to detail, as achieving the desired depth of color took time and multiple applications.

Cleanup of Laserification

After the laser cutting and painting, the next phase involved cleaning up the map. This included peeling off the protective paper layer that was applied during the laser cutting process. The team used denatured alcohol and manual scraping to remove residue and ensure a clean finish. Any imperfections, such as chips or skips in the wood, were repaired with super glue, further refining the map's appearance.

French Cleat Installation

Given the size and weight of the finished map, a secure mounting solution was necessary. The team opted for a French cleat, which provides robust support for large pieces. This installation method ensures that the map would remain securely mounted on the wall, allowing it to be displayed prominently in the Viva Fall River store.

Adhering the Bits Together

To ensure the map's durability, the front and back pieces were bonded together using thick epoxy. The surfaces were sanded to create a rough texture, promoting better adhesion. The epoxy was carefully applied, and the two sections were aligned to ensure a seamless connection. This step was crucial for maintaining the integrity of the map over time.

Notable Landmarks

In addition to the main map, the project included the addition of icons representing notable landmarks and businesses in Fall River. These icons were strategically placed on the map, allowing viewers to easily identify important locations. Each icon featured a QR code, providing access to additional information about the businesses, further enhancing the map's functionality.

More Stability

To reinforce the joints between the two main sections of the map, additional wooden pieces were cut and adhered using epoxy. This added structural integrity, ensuring that the map would withstand the test of time and remain a beloved centerpiece in the store. The careful consideration of stability was essential, given the map's size and weight.

Applying the Varnish

To protect the finished map, TotalBoat Halcyon Varnish was applied. This varnish offers UV protection and durability, making it suitable for a display piece that may encounter wear and tear. Multiple coats were applied, with sanding between each layer to ensure proper adhesion and a smooth finish. The goal was to achieve a glossy, water-like appearance that would enhance the overall aesthetic of the map.

It's Done?

After several hours of work, the moment of truth arrived. The team carefully inspected the completed map, ensuring that every detail was perfect. The vibrant colors of the water, the intricate details of the streets, and the overall craftsmanship came together beautifully, creating a stunning representation of Fall River.

The Reveal

With the installation process underway, the excitement grew as the map was finally mounted on the wall. The reveal was met with enthusiasm, as the vibrant colors and intricate design were showcased for the first time. The map not only served as a decorative piece but also as a functional tool for locals and visitors to explore Fall River.

Installation

The installation process involved careful measurements to ensure that the map was hung at the perfect height and orientation. The team took their time to make sure everything aligned correctly, resulting in a professional-looking display. The final placement was a testament to the hard work and creativity that went into the project.

In All Its Glory...

Once installed, the map transformed the space, adding character and a sense of community to the maker store. The green icons representing local businesses provided an interactive element, encouraging visitors to engage with the map and learn more about the area. The project was a success, showcasing the beauty of Fall River and the creativity of those involved.

Thank You!

This project was not only a labor of love but also a collaborative effort that brought together various skills and talents. The team expressed gratitude for the opportunity to create something meaningful for the community. Feedback from viewers and locals has been overwhelmingly positive, reinforcing the value of such projects in promoting local culture and businesses.
