This week's project spotlight shines on a collaboration with the incredible Xyla Foxlin! Inspired by a chance meeting at WorkbenchCon, The New Janky Workshop took on the challenge of creating a unique LED sign for Xyla's workshop, featuring her iconic "BotalToat" logo. This wasn't just any sign though, this was going to be an entirely acrylic masterpiece with illuminated by LEDs, and the journey to get there was packed with ingenuity and some "janky" moments.
From Sticker to SVG to Shining Sign
The project started with a simple sticker, gifted by Xyla herself. Using a clever tool called the Shaper Trace, the sticker's design was transformed into an SVG file, ready to be brought to life. MakerCase.com helped generate the box design with finger joints, while Illustrator was used for the finer details (though the video skips the potentially boring bits!).
TotalBoat to the Rescue (and some CA Glue Magic)
With the design in place, the next hurdle was assembly. Enter TotalBoat, who generously provided their new TotalBond CA glue for the project. After rigorous testing (because this sign was destined for a real workshop, not just a shelf!), the CA glue proved its strength. A combination of sanding for better adhesion, accelerator for speedy curing, and a glue syringe for precision application ensured a strong and clean build.
Masking, Clamping, and a Touch of Debonder
To keep the CA glue contained and create clean lines, vinyl masking paper was a lifesaver. Weights played a crucial role in clamping the acrylic pieces together while the glue cured – a reminder that workshop clamping doesn't always require fancy tools! And when the masking paper got a little too friendly with the acrylic, "Uncure" or "Debonder" came to the rescue, dissolving the excess glue without harming the sign.
The Final Reveal
The finished sign is a sleek, glowing testament to the maker spirit. The acrylic box houses the illuminated BotalToat logo, ready to add a touch of fun to Xyla's workspace.
